Kano Govt furnishes public schools with N360m -Ganduje

Kano state government has purchased and distributed instructional and related materials worth N360 million to public primary schools in the state. The items include 10, 000 specially built 3-seater desks/chairs and teachers’ furniture, thousands of p1 – p6 curricula, textbooks, computer sets and accessories and motorcycles to local education authority technical staff for projects inspection. Distributing the materials at the headquarters of the state Universal Basic Education Board, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje explained that “the move is part of sustained commitment to revitalize the basic education sub-sector for improved leaning outcomes.” The governor noted that the fact that the state has “over 3 Million pupils in 6, 000 public basic education schools, with 52, 000 teachers, makes the challenge in the sector higher than that of many states in the

federation.” Regarding school furniture, he lamented that his administration inherited 198, 832 sets of furniture available for the 30, 126 classrooms as against the required number of 914 549, while toilet facilities are far below the requirement in most of the schools. Stressing that the challenges are too enormous for the administration to handle alone, he urged individuals and organizations to continue to support the government in its bid to revamp the sector of education. Governor Ganduje appealed to teachers and education administrators to ensure that the materials donated were properly used. In his welcome remarks, the Executive Chairman, Kano state Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Malam Zakari Ibrahim Bagwai explained that despite challenges of infrastructure, facilities and manpower, the board would remain committed towards discharging its mandate. In a related development, Governor Ganduje used the opportunity of the occasion to commission a repository donated to the state Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, by ESSPIN, a DFID funded project.
