Governor Dapo Abiodun Announces $5 Million British Battery Recycling Plant in Ogun State, a First in Africa

Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced the establishment of a $5 million British-backed battery recycling plant in Ogun State, marking the first of its kind in Africa. This is sequel to a meeting with the UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery, at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The project, a partnership between Ogun Invest, the Bureau of Lands, and British investors, will leverage cutting-edge technology to recycle e-waste by converting battery cells back into chemical form, with the resulting minerals exported for new battery production. The initiative is expected to bring job opportunities to the state, positioning Ogun as a leader in battery recycling across the continent.

Governor Abiodun further highlighted the United Kingdom's interest in expanding its investments in the state, particularly in energy, technology, agriculture, and education. Ongoing discussions are aimed at strengthening these partnerships. British International Investment has already contributed to cashew processing in Ogun and is expected to provide technical support for the state’s mass transit system.
