In a bid to effectively tackle problem of insecurity rocking the country, the National Assembly has been enjoined to expedite action on passage of the bill on establishment of State Police to compliment Federal Police in the provision of security for the citizenry.
The call for State Police was contained in a communique issued yesterday in Lagos at the end second quarter Conference of Speakers held in Lagos. According to the communique the Police should desist from invading Legislative Houses in the country. Participants also commended federal government for granting financial autonomy to the Legislature and the Judiciary as this will help to strengthen our democracy.
The Speakers who hailed report of the technical committee on financial autonomy of the Legislature and Judiciary agreed that politicians should be cautious of their utterances especially now that country is approaching elections.
The participants from 36 states of the Federation also elected Rt. Hon Mudashiru Obasa alongside other executives as Chairman Conference of speakers of State Legislatures Speaking on his election, Chairman Conference of Speakers Obasa vowed to do everything possible to protect the sacred mandate of the Legislature and ensure sanctity is not assaulted.
Obasa noted that in recent times the Legislature has been attacked by those who don’t know function of the Legislature.
